ACCESS TO EDUCATION FOR ALL

Introduction

​Focus is on ensuring that all children have equal opportunity in education regardless of their social class, gender, ethnicity background or physical and mental disabilities

 

Objective

Promote access to education for children in deprived and marginalized communities

​

Education for All Results
  1. Pioneered a functional literacy model - the Complementary Basic Education Model (CBE), which provides access to education for out-of-school children from deprived and hard-to-reach communities in Ghana. It is an accelerated approach providing literacy numeracy and life skills in the mother tongue for 9 months using child-centered, participatory and gender sensitive methodologies.

  2. Implemented the CBE model in over 25 districts in Ghana (particularly Northern Ghana) with funding from DANIDA, FCDO, UNICEF, USAID, reaching over 350,000 children and over 90% of them have integrated into formal schools.

  3. 3School for Life provided technical support to other Civil Society Organizations to replicate the model and collaborated with them to advocate for the Government of Ghana to adopt the model as part of Ghana’s Education System.

  4. Provided technical support to the Government - the Ghana Education Service - as part of mainstreaming the model in to the Ghana Education System

  5. Played an influential role in the CBE policy development process by leading the formation and convening of the CBE Alliance with membership including Oxfam, the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT) and the Northern Network for Education Development (NNED); Afrikids & Link Community Development.

  6. Developed CBE materials into a standardized CBE package for usage by all Implementing Partners. The material is now available in fourteen (14) local languages

  7. Provides technical support to the Ministry of Education/GES on the implementation of CBE.

QUALITY EDUCATION

Introduction

​School for LIfe's focus is on ensuring that children in deprived, hard-to-reach and marginalized communities receive quality basic education.

 

Objective

To promote and contribute to achieving good learning outcomes in basic schools

​

Quality Education Results
  1. Adapted key elements of the functional literacy model such as participatory, child-centered and gender sensitive approach as well as locally available teaching and learning materials to be used in the formal school system;

  2. Implemented these methodologies through the Alliance for Change in Education (a consortium of 7 Ghanaian and Danish partners), which combined School for Life educational approaches with the wing-school model as part of the formal system;

  3. ​Development of training models, curriculum and instructional materials as well as in-service training for Teachers in collaboration with Districts Directorates of Education;

  4. Implemented teacher support programmes and teacher training in participatory methodologies and the development of learning resources in in over 341 formal schools. Mainstreamed Reflective teaching in beneficiary schools which contributed to improved quality of teaching.   

  5. Enhanced relational competencies of teachers for conducive classroom environment for learning improvement under the Teacher Professional Development Project (TPDP) in Mion District

SCHOOL GOVERNANCE

Introduction

​School for Life focus on ensuring a well-functioning educational governance and management System in schools, with relevant educational governance structures having  adequate capacity and access to engagement platforms.

​

Objective

To promote and strengthen the functionality of formal and informal education structures for accountable educational governance

​

School Governance Results
  1. ​Extensive experience in cooperating with GES at national, regional and district level, as well as capacity building of School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs);

  2. Strengthened school governance in 445 schools across thirteen Districts in Northern Region through capacity building of SMCs and Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) This resulted in more transparent and accountable school management and stronger community involvement;

  3. Experienced in mobilizing and facilitating Community ownership and involvement in the educational governance and accountability processes

EQUITY IN EDUCATION

Introduction

School for Life works continuously  on promoting a fair and inclusive system that addresses barriers to equal opportunities to education

 

Objective

To promote inclusiveness, fair allocation, distribution and accountability of education resources

​

Equitable Results 
  1. Built Strategic Alliances and Collaboration with other Civil Society Organisations including the Northern Network for Education Development and the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition to advocate for inclusive education and promotion of pro-poor policies to address inequity in education;

  2. Mainstreamed gender into the School for Life model with emphasis on gender balance thus ensuring that girls and other marginalized groups have access to education.

  3. Developed holistic approach to promote girls’ education through community dialogue, use of role models, and involving institutional stakeholders at community and district level

  4. Mobilized and built capacities of Citizen groups in over 60 communities in Northern Ghana to generate evidence and advocate for their education rights using social accountability tools and processes.
