Sulemana Osman Saakahas built a successful career spanning almost 30 years of regular work and occasional consultancy in private sector, Government/public service and civil society organisations.Prior to joining the School for Life team in January 2004 as head of the organisation, S. O. Saaka had worked with the Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association Limited (CUA Ltd. and the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), among others. While working with the EPA, S. O. Saaka served as National Focal Person for Desertification Control. He also represented Ghana on the United Nations Inter-Governmental Negotiation Committee on Desertification (INCD) and the African Deserts and Arid Lands Committee (ADALCO).
S. O. Saaka led School for Life successfully through a landmark phase that delivered functional literacy to 44,000 out-of-school children in 5 years, in addition to having the School for Life model replicated to cover almost 40,000 more of such children in Northern Ghana within the same period (2004 - 2008).
His continuous leadership of School for Life has seen the organization strike strategic partnerships with relevant state institutions and many Developing Partners,through which SfL succeeded in making over 150,000 out-of-school children literate in their mother-tongue by the close of 2012. The School for Life model has also led to the development of a Complementary Basic Education (CBE Policy) in Ghana based on the model.
Through leading School for Life, S. O. Saaka hopes to continue to contribute to maintaining the organisation as a centre of excellence that inspires breakthroughs in education and provides technical support to other education stakeholders in Ghana and beyond.
Saaka holds a Masters Degree in Regional Planning from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (Kumasi, Ghana) and Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with Political Science from the University of Ghana. Has also undergone other forms of training including Organisational Change Management & Leadership, Project Planning & Management, Cooperative Administration, Corporate Governance for NGO Management and Network/ Alliance Building training for CSOs in West Africa.
